Jump starting your car is easy enough to do but you need to be careful.

- Another car with a similar-sized engine
- Gloves

1 – Get ready

Switch engine off
[Narrator]
Make sure the engine is switched off. Turn off all lights and the radio as well.

Check battery

The individual moves to the side of the car, opens the door and pops the bonnet using the lever underneath the dashboard.

Pop the bonnet to inspect the battery and check if there’s any sign of damage or leakage. If there is, then don’t perform a jump start.

The mechanic moves to the front of the car, lifts the bonnet and secures it with the stand. The mechanic then lifts the battery flap to check for any damage or leakage.

2 – Prepare both cars

The camera moves to show some jump lead cables (one red and one black) draped over a stack of tyres within a mechanic’s workshop.

Park both cars next to each other to make sure the jump leads reach both batteries
[Visual transition/change]
The mechanic picks up the jump leads and walks with them over to the middle of what is now two cars with their bonnets open, side by side.

3 – Connect batteries

The screen transitions to show the inside of the car engine and the mechanics gloved hands connecting the jump leads to the battery of one car – first the positive red cables and then the negative black cables.

Connect the jump leads
[Narrator]
Connect the red, positive jump leads to the positive terminals one at a time, the terminals without the negative symbol below.

Repeat the process connecting the black, negative jump leads to the negative terminals, the terminals with the negative symbol below.

4 – Recharge battery

The camera moves to show the mechanic opening the car door, getting into the drivers seat and turning the key in the ignition.

Start the car and wait 10 mins

Be careful when removing the jump cables as there is live electricity running through them.
Start the car with the good battery and leave it running for 10 minutes to charge the flat battery.

5 – Remove jump leads

Be careful when removing the jump cables as there is live electricity running through them.

The mechanic walks towards the two cars and reaches into the bonnet of the red car to disconnect the jump leads.

Disconnect the jump leads
[Narrator]
First, unclip the black, negative jump lead from your car’s terminal, and then the other end from the other car. Remove the red, positive jump lead from the other car first and then from your car. Now that your car is up and running, remember to store the jump leads safely away

The mechanic moves between the two cars removing the jump leads in the order of the narration. As the narration finishes the mechanic closes the bonnet of both cars one at a time.
